As a project of STU Sustainability and the STUSU Sustainability & Environmental Awareness Committee, the Divest STU campaign is working to make St. Thomas University a leader in climate action.

What is divestment and why is it important?

Divestment is the opposite of investment--it means getting rid of stocks, bonds, or investment funds that are unethical.

Many institutions, including St. Thomas University, invest money in fossil fuel companies to generate income. Divestment calls for an end to fossil fuel sponsorship that currently allows companies involved in fossil fuel extraction the social license to operate. By investing in the fossil fuel industry, St. Thomas University is legitimizing destructive and polluting operations that contribute to the climate crisis.

If it’s wrong to wreck the climate, it’s wrong to profit from that wreckage.
— Bill McKibben

Why should STU divest from fossil fuels?

According to our Environmental Policy, "St. Thomas University is committed to becoming a leader among academic institutions in the practice of environmental management and stewardship" and "will use its resources in a manner that does not compromise the ability of future generation to meet their needs".

Divesting from fossil fuels would help St. Thomas University assert itself as an environmental leader within the post-secondary sector and demonstrate how the University is taking steps towards a more sustainable world.

The Divest STU campaign demands an ethical financial portfolio at St. Thomas University that supports the well-being of its students, staff, and faculty who deserve a future not defined by climate chaos.

We call upon St. Thomas University to create an ethical investment portfolio by:

  1. Immediately ending any new investments in the fossil fuel industry

  2. Divesting all current holdings, direct and indirect, from the fossil fuel industry within two years

  3. Refusing any funds from the fossil fuel industry that could impact research and programs.
